The Postgraduate Dean’s Management Plan aims to enhance and give visibility to socially impactful actions carried out within the Programs through social engagement developed in university extension projects across different areas of knowledge. In this regard, the integration of extension activities into postgraduate studies promotes the inseparability of research, teaching, and extension, connecting knowledge production with societal demands and challenges through Applied Research and Intervention Projects, Partnerships with Communities and Productive Sectors, Training of Professionals Committed to Social Reality, Technology and Knowledge Transfer, Production of Critical and Inclusive Knowledge, Development of Public Policies and Strategic Actions, and, finally, Publication and Dissemination of Social Impact Results.
It is worth noting that UFRPE's extension projects align with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The extension proposal of UFRPE, approved under PROEXT-PG, involved 28 Programs from different areas of knowledge, where interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity are markedly present, expanding the opportunity to positively impact the communities that will benefit from the transformative actions of this project.
The Support Program for the Consolidation of University Extension in UFRPE’s Postgraduate Programs (PROEXT-PG/UFRPE) is a multidisciplinary proposal involving 28 postgraduate programs from various fields of knowledge. It aims to consolidate interdisciplinary and institutional research activities linked to extension. The project was organized into six thematic axes, covering different knowledge areas where significant and transformative actions are carried out in social, environmental, economic, and cultural fields at local and regional levels.
The project began in 2024, and in that year, the First Workshop on Extension Applied to Postgraduate Studies at UFRPE was held, where the participating programs were grouped according to the project's objectives, and joint actions in the involved communities were discussed and defined. The institutional project’s approved objectives were organized into the following thematic axes: Environment, Animal Production, Education and Sciences, Information Technology, Culture and Public Policies, and Food Education and Health.
The Action Plan of the Support Program for the Consolidation of University Extension in Postgraduate Programs involves 28 out of the 42 postgraduate programs at UFRPE, with representation from nearly all major areas of knowledge. The proposal integrates the activities of scholarship holders with faculty and students from postgraduate programs, including programs from two academic units located in the municipalities of Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Serra Talhada, in the State of Pernambuco.
The extension activities of PROEXT-PG/UFRPE focus primarily on the sustainable development of family farming, education, health, and technology, involving postgraduate and undergraduate faculty and students across various territories in Pernambuco. These actions positively impact the quality of life of civil society through extension activities in agricultural sciences, education, health, and technology, contributing to reducing social asymmetries highlighted in the National Postgraduate System.
In its pursuit of consolidation through the promotion of social, economic, environmental, cultural, and technological impacts, the postgraduate program engaged in dialogue with various societal sectors to foster the integration of teaching, research, and extension. Within this context, the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), through the Institutional Program for Supporting the Inclusion of University Extension in UFRPE’s Postgraduate Programs, is developing a joint project with various postgraduate programs through interdisciplinary and institutional research activities linked to extension. This initiative contributes to the extension training of postgraduate students and improves the quality of life of the population.
Thus, the training of extensionist researchers and the articulation of postgraduate studies with undergraduate students can help address demands from different sectors of civil society by integrating various areas of knowledge. Additionally, it strengthens partnerships with public, private, and third-sector organizations, facilitating access to communities and territories where the institutional project is to be developed.
The extension actions of the "Support Program for the Consolidation of University Extension in UFRPE’s Postgraduate Programs" focus on developing agriculture, education, health, and technology, with direct involvement from undergraduate and postgraduate students across various territories in Pernambuco. These efforts aim to effectively work alongside civil society through diverse extension actions in agricultural sciences, education, health, and technology, coordinated by the Postgraduate Dean’s Office and the Dean’s Office for Extension, Culture, and Citizenship. These initiatives will support societal well-being and help reduce asymmetries identified in the National Postgraduate System (SNPG). This project was approved under the PROEXT-PG call for proposals.
The faculty members of the program not only engage theoretically within their research lines but are also highly active in various technical advisory activities for fishermen and aquaculture producers. The qualification of labor for the fishing and aquaculture sectors, along with the support provided to producers through department facilities, results in increased efficiency in the sector, promotion of entrepreneurial activities, increased income and employment in established enterprises, alternative income opportunities for the unemployed, food security, and social inclusion.
Among these activities, we highlight several training courses for producers and aquaculture technicians, as well as extension projects:
- Development of Oyster Farming in Itapissuma, PE – A state-level project demonstrating the potential of mollusk cultivation as a strategy to increase the income of artisanal fishermen on the northern coast of Pernambuco.
- Sardine or Manjuba? A Matter of Identity – A state-level project raising awareness about the fishing potential of a highly consumed species in Pernambuco’s coastal region.
- Environmental Education as a Tool for Awareness Regarding Shark Attacks – A state-level project to educate coastal residents of Pernambuco about shark attacks.
- Development of Bycatch Reduction Devices for Shrimp Trawl Fishing in Artisanal Fishing Communities – An international FAO project (REBYC-II LAC) operating in Latin America and the Caribbean, focusing on artisanal fishermen.
- Collaboration with the Pernambuco Military Fire Department (CBMPE) – Delivering lectures on shark incidents to trainees and forming research partnerships on human-shark interactions.
- Simplified Shrimp Hatchery Management in CE, PB, and SE (EMBRAPA/SEBRAE/UFRPE) – A project targeting shrimp producers in Brazil’s Northeast.
All these projects aim to enhance the productivity of the fisheries and aquaculture sector, transforming scientific knowledge into a tool for social and economic development while also making environmental contributions.
The PPG-RPAq program plays a significant regional, national, and international role in training professionals for the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
The program’s teaching and research infrastructure, combined with its strategic geographic location in a major urban center (Recife and its metropolitan area), has attracted students not only from the Northeast but from other regions of Brazil as well. Thus, PPG-RPAq is increasingly consolidating itself as a postgraduate hub in its field, training highly qualified professionals to support the sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture.
The program is also involved in:
- Collaborative research with national and international postgraduate programs.
- Student exchange programs with Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (UNALM-Peru).
- Engagement with primary and secondary education through outreach projects such as "Aquaculture Goes to School" and lectures on shark attacks in Pernambuco.
- Participation in science fairs and public school initiatives.
PPG-RPAq is committed to fostering innovation, research, and outreach to advance sustainable fisheries and aquaculture while strengthening university-society partnerships.

The TAPIOCA project, launched in 2018, coordinated by UFRPE (Professor Flávia Frédou, faculty member of the course), UFPE, and the French Institute of Research for Development (IRD), in collaboration with more than ten other federal universities, mainly from the North and Northeast of Brazil, created the International Joint Laboratory "Tropical Atlantic Interdisciplinary Laboratory on Physical, Biogeochemical, Ecological, and Human Dynamics" (IJL TAPIOCA; https://tapioca.ird.fr/). It has a strong outreach component, involving students and professors. Since 2018, dozens of activities have been carried out, reaching more than 10,000 people through science cafés, school events, radio programs, educational games, beach cleanup campaigns, and cultural activities, in partnership with NGOs, associations, public institutions, and universities. Videos and content are widely shared on social media.
Highlights and actions with students of the course:
